Vijapur
Name of the centre : Centre of Excellence for Research on wheat, Vijapur, District Mehsana (Gujarat) 382870
Year of Start : 1962(AICRP W&B -20-01-1971)
University/ Department :Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University(SDAU), SardarKrushinagar
Importance of centre:
The precise activities on wheat research in Gujarat were initiated in 1962 with the establishment of the wheat research centre at Vijapur ; district Mehsana in North Gujarat, through the activities on rainfed wheat research had been operative at Arnej since 1944. At present the centre caters to coordinating the multi-disciplinary and multi – location research activities of wheat in Gujarat state encompassing crop improvement, resources management, crop protection and quality aspects besides all important quality seed production for enhanced and sustained wheat production. As such it is a nodal centre of the state for planning, execution and monitoring of research activities of wheat in the state. Needless to mention, Vijapur has been an important AICWBIP coordinated centre particularly for breeding robust breeding material and varieties. The center has adequate farm facilities with matching quality and soil science laboratories. The center was braced up with new office cum laboratory building about a couple of year back. The facilities were propped up with funds from other projects particularly the RKVY.
The centre has also played a proactive role in enhancing production beyond the boundaries of th state in term of breeding 17 highly versatile varieties comprising bread (14) and durum (3) that have notched good favour in central and peninsular zone. Consequently, two varieties of the centre viz; GW 273 and GW 322 are among the most indented varieties of the country. In addition to this ,29 recommendations in crop production 15 in crop protection and 3 in quality improvement has been crucial in impacting cost of production, conservation of natural resources and spike in productivity, thereby sustaining wheat crop in the state like Gujarat which is known for its penchant of growing overarching non- cereals and cash crops. The research has also enabled the region to remain free from various insect- pests and disease. As a result of this no outbreak of any disease or pest has been witnessed during last five years.
Gujarat predominantly grows bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)- 85% followed by durum or macaroni wheat (Triticum durum Desf.)- 15%. Discoccum (Triticum dicoccum) is also grown in scatter pockets in scatter pockets in Saurashtra along the basins of Ojat river. All aestivum is irrigated while durum is grown both under rainfed and irrigated system. Ironically, the rainfed durum wheat can be ascribed as the most stresses wheat grown under triple stress conditions of water, heat and dreaded soil hazards. In nutshell, the holistic activities of the centre aim at improving the productivity, profitability and quality of wheat with reference to domestic and industrial demand.
Mandate:
To enhance food and nutritional security with concomitant sustainability of natural resources base.
