Importance of centre and mandate
Pantnagar is situated in Terai region of the foot hills of Himalayas. It represents North Western Plain Zone and Northem Hill Zone. The terai, bhabhar and vallies are normally irrigated and remaining areas in Garhwal and Kumaon regions are rainfed. Wheat research at Pantnagar came under the agies of All India coordinated Wheat Improvement Programme in this year 1965. Taking into consideration the importance of wheat crop in the region, a well organized multi-disciplinary wheat group has been working to tackle various research problems in this field of genetics, breeding and quality, agronomy, crop protection, physiology, seed production, and transfer of technology. Pantnagar centre has played a pivotal role in wheat revolution by releasing semi – dwarf high yielding varieties and by providing the package of practices and quality seeds to the farmers of the country.
