Importance of centre and mandate
The Wheat Research Centre at Powarkheda has been one of the oldest station opened by the Madhya Pradesh Agriculture department in the year 1903. The farm is situated side of (NH -69) Hoshangabad- Itrasi road, four miles from later. The soil is typical for best wheat i.e. medium to deep black soil (Vertisoil) of central Narmada valley. Systematic research work for the varietal improvement of wheat was started by Sir Geoffary Evans, then Deputy Director Agriculture, working at Powarkheda, Hoshangabad. Early work on wheat pertains to varietal development for rainfed condition. Sir evans made a collection of the varieties of wheat grown all over state and practiced single plant selection. This work resulted in isolation of a number of improved strains and were distributed for general cultivation. Letter on many workers Dr. R.B. Ekbote, Dr. S.P. Singh, Dr. N.S. Sisodia worked as wheat breeder and developed no. of varieties.

Mandate:
- To evolve high yielding black and brown rust resistant varieties suitable for rain fed, irrigated timely and late sown conditions of different agro climate regions of MP.
- To work out agronomic techniques for improved wheat varieties with special reference to NPK doses, time of planting, optimum seed rate, water requirement and herbicidal sensitivity to the varieties.
- Screening of wheat varieties and lines against black and brown rust under natural and artificial epiphytotic condition.
