Importance of centre and mandate
LOCATION
WRS, JAU, Junagadh (Gujarat) is situated at an altitude of 61 m above MSL, and at 70°30’ E longitude and 21°30’N latitude. It near the foot hills of the mountain Girnar. One of the Jyotirlingas, Somnath is about 90km awey from Junagadh. The birth place of beloved Mahatma Gandhi (The Father of Nation), Porbandar is about 120km from Jungadh.
IMPORTANCE OF CENTRE
- Station represent South Saurashtra Agro-climatic zone of the state in which wheat is the main crop in rabi season.
- It is the important centre for breeding bread and durum wheat for crop improvement in terms of yield, quality, disease resistance and biotic stress tolerance particularly heat tolerance, resource management, plant protection etc. By this way it helps AICW&BIP in uplifting the status of wheat at national and international levels.
- It is also one of the important centres for testing wheat materials of different AICW&BIP centres of the country.
- Incidence of high temperature was relatively high under both timely and late sown conduction at Jungadh, which facilitates screening of promising genotypes for thermal stress tolerance.
MANDATE
- Development of high yielding, biotic and abiotic stress resistant/tolerant varieties with good grain quality in bread and durum wheat.
- Screening National/International wheat nurseries for various traits.
- Testing genotypes developed by different AICW&BIP centres of the country
- To carryout Resource management related trails.
- Breeder seed production of released varieties.
- Dissemination of production technologies to the farmers through FLDs, Krushi mela’s, Krushi Mahotsav’s, Khedut shibirs etc.
